The worldwide Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) meets only when necessary. Jesuits call the meetings congregations. Since the Society of Jesus began in the 1500s only 35 General Congregations have met, the most recent in 2008 to elect a new General Superior, Father Adolfo Nicolás.
After a general congregation the Jesuits keep abreast of changing circumstances, and representatives of all the Jesuit provinces meet every four years. They assess the circumstances and decide if circumstances demand a general congregation. The first such meeting after General Congregation 35 ended this month in Africa.
