Earlier this week a Vatican letter to Irish bishops came into public circulation.
The subject involved the painful and painfully frustrating sex abuse scandal by some clergy. Some called the letter a "smoking gun," suggesting it indicated a cover up by the Church. In the best of circumstances Vatican statements always need clarification. The recently circulated letter was no vehicle of transparency in this very sad matter. Long-time Vatican observer, Mr. John L. Allen Jr., noted "three bits of context, however, which complicate efforts to tout the letter as a smoking gun."
